For the past few weeks or so, I think the chatroom user count on the icon was broken, always showing 0 users. It seems to have been fixed recently.

But this is indicative of a few things. One, the potential magnitude of a small glitch. In this case, everyone assumed the chats were empty and so neglected them. Turns into a chicken/egg issue. I've mentioned the slightly related chatroom userlist wonkiness before. Two, our dependence on that counter. The appearance of chat activity hinged on that little number, whereas before, people would click to see the chatroom menu. Three, further effect regardless of it being broken or not. Sure, the feature is useful, but there's a point where ease and the traditional ways should diverge. For instance, a person visiting this site for the first time would quickly notice that chatroom number, and dare I say, might make a decision about joining based on that.

I'm going to agree with Lazerwolf's previous statement in regards to the rudeness some members display on this website. I didn't believe it at first, however after writing a series of blogs that apparently angered certain people, I've come to the realization that there are a lot of judgmental, prejudiced, hypocritical, #YOLOSWAG douche-bags on this website.

Like, seriously, am I dedicating my precious time to deliver an epic weather application to a community that mostly doesn't deserve it? The only people who I actually respect on this website is numbered, and shrinking as I write this. There are even a few admins of whom I wish they'd act differently. Possibly one of the side effects of being granted anonymity, but that's not an excuse. Sk8rJess just recently left because of how rude some (but not all) of the members were being, and how there were even ADMINS breaking the rules. I seriously think there could be some change in the website in regards to behavior.

This website is supposed to be fun, and it's becoming less fun for me, and for others like me who aren't douche bags, because of douche bags.

What seems to be the gist of above exchange is that negativity is unpleasant, as opposed to negativity driving members away. Former is true, yet true anywhere. I occasionally see older members long for the paradise of yesteryear; I assure you, there were similar problems then, and perspective was limited. Petty spats, spite, defamation, you-name-it: they are cancerous. The ugly will always exist, so rather than contribute or attempt an end-all, displace it with positivity. Creativity, enthusiasm, and open-mindedness are awesome to behold. Allow them to overwhelm. Make them the net legacy of this community.

That really is what separates toxic communities from healthy ones. Any online community is just a simulacrum of life and culture. Rooting oneself in one leads to exposure. We needn't expect praise. Value the journey, as they say.
