The distinguished Draconid_Jo spake:
This thread is now more important (and dead) than ever before given the shape that this website is in.
Aside from fixing things here (like making the BBs <span style="text-decoration:underline">fully</span> dark mode compatible), what else can be done to save this place? Why is it that so many former members will still visit the SDK Discord server, but not SDK itself?
(I mean, most don't even log in once a month to see who's still around here. Why is that?)
This thread began back in 2016, about 3 years before I joined in 2019, and although people may have been trying to revive this place back then, obviously they're ideas didn't work very well, or this place wouldn't be in the sorry state that it is in now. :(
(It didn't seem that bad back in 2019 IMO. I can only imagine what this place was like back in 2016, when they first thought that it was "dying fast".)
I obviously have more questions than answers, but we NEED to start asking some important questions (and coming up with some answers), or this place really will die, regardless of what the few truly loyal people like myself think.
Why do people abandon this place? Is this place that much inferior to all of those mainstream social media websites that censor politically incorrect speech and sell user's data?
(I don't get what is so good about Facebook, Twitter, etc., other than their size.)/quote]I agree. This thread is very important now.
They haven't made it fully dark mode compatible yet? Haven't noticed [bold]yet[/bold]. I believe that they should also make it so you can edit BB replies. I don't know why people are so active on Discord and yet not this site to a major extent.
I joined in 2021 and I believe that was when this site was the most dead. There was me, banjo2, mods, you, and like maybe one other person I could find. It did basically revive itself in the later half of 2021 though.
Basically people like you and me are loyal to this place. Others mainly because they have to be. SDKPaint discord server is still not that active actually but even so, this site is dying. I know that I will be one of the last people here.
I have no clue why people abandoned this place. It isn't that inferior in my opinion. Maybe they need to make it better but it isn't bad enough to abandon mostly free speech and not have a lot of people's data stolen. It's closer to the old days of the internet where you only really get banned if it's too chaotic. Don't believe me? Go to any group and stay around long enough for drama to happen. Almost nobody ever gets banned or even warned. It's freeland. I hope more people come on here eventually but it sucks they won't. Also, selling user data is pretty bad due to the extent.
Now time to explain the mainstream social media sites.
<input type="button" class="form_button" style="width:auto;padding:1px 10px" value="Long List of Explanations" onclick="if(this.nextSibling.style.display==''){this.nextSibling.style.display='none';}else{this.nextSibling.style.display='';}"><div class="spoiler_body" style=""><span style="color:#f00">YouTube:</span>
This is a video sharing site. It isn't as much like the typical social media site but still technically one. It makes sense why people like this one. So much content (videos). It is very fun in my opinion however it is getting worse and the only competitor is Odysee.
<span style="color:darkblue">Facebook:</span>
I have no clue about this one as I never used it. From what I can tell, it's worse than google and is stupid. Myspace (and if you want to have a clone, SpaceHey) was better from what I can tell than Facebook. Facebook was originally for college students but now it's for everyone so it doesn't make sense anymore.
<span style="color:cyan">Twitter:</span>
This is a site for sending short messages. 2006 Twitter made sense but after they added chain tweets and stuff like that, it removed any argument you had. Character Extension was whatever, but chain tweets defeated the need for a character limit (that was major) so just remove it. Twitter is easily offended too and even has accounts for p3d0 shit. Horrible. Don't get it really.
<span style="color:orange">Reddit:</span>
This was originally another place of free speech. I'd argue it had the power to change the course of history. If it wasn't due to the horrible mods on this site half the time (such as awkwardtheturtle), it would have likely still made the rest of the internet have free speech. This site showed that with enough censoring, the backlash of stuff could be minor. That's why pro-BLM posts also get 1000s of updoots whereas posts exposing it are often removed and hated. Also, at one point, Spez (a person who did stuff like moderate and "improve" reddit) changed comments and stuff that he personally and I mean personally, didn't like. 6% of all posts have also been deleted before too.
<span style="color:purple">Discord:</span>
Discord makes sense. It still is kinda free speech for smaller servers and in DMs but otherwise, it really isn't that much. Bigger servers you have to be careful about that though. It is better to say the least in most cases so at least Discord is a good reason. Also, great for gamers.
<span style="color:green">4chan:</span>
This isn't really big but it is the last place with actual free speech. In fact, it is so free that people take it a bit too far I bet. This is one of the few sites that also compete.
<span style="color:gray">GBAtemp:</span>
GBATemp is only now kinda a competitor as it has groups and blogs now. Even then, its mostly focused on technology stuff so who cares about this one for now. It's a bigger site that's more like older sites to say the least.</div>
Essentially, idk why ppl like most of them so much. YouTube, Discord, 4chan, and GBATemp are basically the only ones I see. This site really needs to be revived, but how...
PAINT IS RISING AGAIN
Actually, he's right on the last one.
The distinguished Draconid_Jo spake:
You're correct, it most certainly is. :)
BTW, I'm a bit curious what y'all think of this version of the history of Paint?
(The recent parts seem a bit off to me, personally.)
