I prefer the older ones for the reason that EVs and IVs and all this new-fangled training didn't exist. It was a lot simpler back then.

^ Only EV's are new, IV's have been there since Gen I.

^Ah, you're right. I tend to think of the new IVs whenever I think of them in general. The IV system did totally get changed for the third generation, and that's what made training such a pain for the Pokemon games ever since.
