Engineers will need six to nine months to bring the damaged nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant to heel, the plant's owners said Sunday in their first public timetable for ending the crisis.
It will take three months to reduce the levels of radioactivity in the plant and restore normal cooling systems in the reactors and spent fuel pools, the Tokyo Electric Power Company announced. Another three to six months will be needed before the reactors are fully shut down and building new shells around their damaged housings, the company said.
Meanwhile, Japan's government said it would try to decontaminate "the widest possible area" in that period before deciding whether the tens of thousands who have been forced to flee their homes will be allowed to return, said Goshi Hosono, an adviser to Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
Will Japan be the next Chernobyl or Three Miles Island?

Japan always gets back up on theiir feet, no matter wat. Esecially with the help of literally ALL the world sending troops. and why build plants next 2 the RING OF FIRE itz just stoopid o-o
Thats bull.
They can't just clean up the radiation. higher then normal levels of radiation will remain high for a very long time. Depending on how high it is
In the long-run, it actually is. But, it's a system that has not been perfceted by many. Illinois has the most active reactor-sites in the U.S., 6. We have roughly a dozen more shut down, due to hazards/flaws. Our Byron plant is under examination, and is leaking currently.
Whoa bro, better slow down bro, don't wanna be a bro, bro.
Japanese are pretty advance they'll figure it out; Nuclear power is cheap and good, but a accident is expensive(as in lives, damage, money, and health/enviroment). Care is the best way to prosper in producing such power, no doubt. And it's worth it kinda', but making use of the eviroment is also nice.

I remember reading a long time ago, that the U.S. actually has enough Geothermal Power ready to be tapped, which could provide either a; 55% of the power[electricity] needed to support the U.S., or, 55% to supply the Continent. It may have been "world", I haven't read the article in a year. Ah, Discover Magazine....
