Bricking by means of an automatic firmware update scares me. It brings to mind the controversial Amazon Kindle incident, in which certain purchased content was removed swiftly and remotely. Though I'm confident that Nintendo would only kill specific devices for good reasons, chaos could occur if Nintendo's software database were hacked. Makes me hope there's an option to shut down all wireless reception. (Is there one?)
It should be obvious why this is happening: game piracy (especially DS) has literally cost Nintendo billions in sales. So it's about time that they imposed a more menacing threat.
@Craig675 No, it cannot be done to DSi models (or Wiis for that matter). Only to 3DS models, once the update is released.
@Kion127 "Bricking" just refers to when a device's software is updated so that it renders the device useless--like a brick.
