Depends on what format you're interested in trying out. In general, though, I'd recommend using Pokémon that you like, and in a similar playstyle to how you battle in the handheld games (rather than trying to learn a completely new battling style just to battle competitively on Showdown), and I'd also recommend checking out some of my Pokémon blogs here on Paint.
(I'll need more information about the format and stuff before I can offer better advice than that, though.)

To make a link have custom text:

[ A = (url) ] (the text you'd like the link to be [ / A] ---With no spaces

The link thing is kind of buggy at the moment, but it should work. About the announcment thing, if I ever find a way to make it look better (since my version is kind of trash), I'll let you know.

Hey Lumiknoll, when doing dividers to bios, don't put dashes.
Simply put [ line ] (no spaces)
Example:
