Hello my children, from my fellow 3DSPaint community, Einstein is going to help me out today, we are going to teach you how to play 3D videos in your 3DS (from youtube or anywhere else), No that doesn't mean you are going to have Youtube in your 3DS browser, sorry.

We are going to show you how to make any video file (3D or 2D) playable directly from your Nintendo 3DS camera App, this is not hacking, not homebrew, and will do absolutely nothing bad to your system (i wouldn't be sharing it, otherwise), all we do here is file manipulation.

We need to get the file we are going to convert, 3D video files can be found on Youtube but make sure you pick "Side-By-Side" Stereo videos, or the converser will not work, i tried using the "top-bottom" conversion of it with a video of that scheme but it didn't work. Its a recent tool and must have a few bugs yet...So try picking side-by-side only.

For example, lets use the "How to train your Dragon 3D trailer", from Youtube

Now lets get the video, you can do that with many sites and programs but there is a special one, the one i use often; http://keepvid.com, just paste the link there wait it load and choose a link. This site will offer many resolutions and formats, i always pick mp4, and i've made some experiences with files converted from 360p and 720p, even if the final converted file is only 480x240, files converted from 720p look noticeably better so i recommend you to download the 720p files, the file converted from 360p was around 83mb, the one from 720p 101mb and the one from 1080p 109mb, this last one had changes in the image (looking better of course) but took a lot longer to download, convert and the changes aren't very noticeable so 720p looks decent and is faster...not that you need to Race to get the file lol, but pick any . (Link to the video i used to experience the resolution All credits to Dream Works Animation SKG)

Here are pictures i took from the converted videos (from my 3DS), this is for you to compare the quality those are 3D images, you can't see them in 3D without a 3D display You can view them directly from a 3DS, the files will be displayed in 2D opened in a computer without 3D capabilities (thumbnails are not displaying the individual files quality).

Tap them to zoom in and 3D.

- Step 3 -

Now open the conversion tool, browse the file you want to convert, if it is a 3D video (side-by-side, don't forget) mark the "side-by-side" box, if it is a 2D video mark the "2D" box, the "top-bottom" 3D conversion didn't work for me, if you successful let me know in the comments (you will need a top-bottom 3D video file). Quality ranges from 1 to 31 here, 1 is the best quality, 31 is the worse. For better results mark the "480x240" box, as the default resolution is 400x240.
As i said before, this tool is a very recent work, so it doesn't have many features including the so simple progress bar.... After you click "convert!" the program will say "converting, please wait" and will not give any signs of life until it finishes the conversion, so don't close it until it is done. It will notify you once its done.

VERY IMPORTANT:

After the file is done, name it this way:

XXX_YYYY

X = CAPITAL Letter

Y = NUMBER

Don't use special characters.

The videos will come as "VID_0001" (0002...0003...etc) So leave them that way or name them as you wish, not changing the naming scheme, because this is how the Nintendo 3DS camera application recognizes files, change it and it will not see it.

Place it in the DCIM folder in your 3DS SD card, it will probably show up in the first folder of the nintendo 3ds camera app (no matter where you put it in the actual sd card DCIM folder) because the date is set as default to 01/01/1900.

It always takes a while to load, so after you are done, run the camera, tap "view videos/photos" and wait until it tells you the files are going to be updated.


IMPORTANT: DO NOT remove the SD card when your 3DS is turned on, always turn it off before removing and inserting the SD card, or the 3DS will have problems to recognize it in the future, trust me this is extremely painful. Happened with my Nintendo DSi.

Specifications:

The Nintendo 3DS video camera application doesn't play videos faster than 15~25 fps, it doesn't matter if the file you have runs faster than that in your computer, its pre-set in the software.

You can still delete, modify and take pictures from these 3D movies from the 3DS.

Video length is limited to 10 minutes.

And no, i will delete any pictures you take from these videos and upload to the 3D album here, unless Derp says we are allowed to do so.
