As me friend Edward and I were headin to the Castle on top of a tall 'ill looking over me small town, which went all the way aroun' it, I thought about how long we was gonna be in the dungeons for. We scrambled up that there 'ill to them tall wooden gates, which was the only opening in that tall stone wall there. They opened with a loud noise that got me tremblin'. We walked into an amazin' courtyard, massive trees bloomin' with them pretty pink rose flowers. The tall guards in armor that twinkled in the sun on either side of us loosened the hold of the rusty chains that held us and took em off. I took a look at Edward, and I could see 'is eyes were wider than I've ever seen 'em. We was both surprised right there and then.
What surprised us even more was when a great many more lads from the village came walkin' out of the main hall to the lef' of the gates, I was pretty good at what me master called arithmetic from counting all the chickens I looked for, so I guessed there was 'bout 50 of 'em or so. They was confused too. After them shiny guards got us into a sort of line, it was like how we saw them knights and archers when they was walking in front of the Noble, all in straight lines, there was a clankin' of chains, which made me think they was gonna strin' us up again, but another great door opened, and who came out but the Great Noble 'im self! Wearing a sort of turbin and robes of what I think was a, sorta green. I immediately got on me hands and knees right there and then, as well as a few other of them lads from the village, but the Noble spoke out in 'is great voice. "Be calm, my faithful servants. You are not to be imprisoned. I would be pleased if you were to stand up in the straight lines my guards got you into."
We all looked at each otha, but did what he told us to, though a bit awkwardly. He gave us all a kind smile and continued. "Thank you, that way I can see you all clearly. Now, you might all be wondering why I have brought you into my castle. If you haven't heard, there is a great danger nearby, and you are the bravest lads of the village I can find. I will train you to be soldiers, and defend our home from these strange creatures. God willing, we win, and our home is kept safe." We all started whisperin' and talkin'. So the rumors were true! There were Monsters from hell about!
Our Noble saw we was getting unsettled so he called out to us, this time louder. "I know how you must feel, anxious of the great unknown. But I assure you that you all will become great soldiers. To do that I have called our hidden allies in the mountains. I bid you to keep their presence here quiet, and do not be alarmed by them, for they are our friends." With a sweep of 'is hand behind 'im out came a dwarf! And another, and another, till there was 'bout 12 or so! The biggest and most scarred of 'em all, who had a great red beard came close to us. "Ar, me laddies. I'm gonna teach ya the ways of the sword! And ye are gonna become great warriors indeed once I be done with ya. Brede's the name, and ye better call me sir when you don't wanna use it!"
I looked at me friend Edward who was right next to me, to see him lookin' at that little man just as confused and shocked as me and the rest of the lads. The dwarf looked at me Great Noble with a frown that knotted 'is thick red eyebrows. "Not the brightest bunch are they? Alright well, I've trained a worse batch of lads before. Let's get started! All of ye into the training yard! Move your lazy arses now!" He barked, stompin' the ground and spreadin' spit all over us. We was terrified as we were marched out into that there yard we would spend quite many moons in.
"Keep your bloody feet in line! Straighten ye back up!" Brede Roared. I got a a first glimpse of that there yard, it was surrounded on both sides by them big stone walls, and there was a fenced off part with what looked like hay bails far beyond. I thought for a mom' that they was raisin' animals! As soon as we was in the yard he got on a sort of platform and started sprayin' spit again. "I've got about 3 weeks to train all of ye into great men! Before them beasts of hell come to eat our faces off!" He gave a great bark of laughter.
"Now, first off me and Brogan here are gonna teach ye loafs the basics of how to use a sword. First ye need to know is this here sword," He went over to one of them shiny guards and took 'is sword out of a kinda leather pouch, "is a good tool to use when ye will be fighting in close combat! Now, we dwarfs prefer an ax, it gets heads off better." He chuckled.
"Observe." Brogan then took a great big ax from off 'is back and started stompin' towards Brede. With a big ringing noise which made me ears hurt, they clashed with them weapons. "So first of all," Brede grunted, "Ye gotta make sure you always keep ye eyes on the opponent's weapon, moving with him and making sure he don't cut any of your limbs off!" He gave 'is barking laugh again. "When he goes to swing at ye," Broden came at 'im and swung 'is ax, "Ye gotta block it!" Bede met Broden's ax with another loud ring that made me 'air rise up. "Alright, now that ye laddies have seen it in action, time for ye to do it!" He pointed one scarred finger over to a long wooden table, where there were lots of them swords. But when I got there, along with the other lads, I saw they was only wooden! "Ye didn't think I was gonna let ye do the real deal now did ye?" All them dwarves started laughin', their deep grovely voices makin' me feel angry.
"All right then, let's see ye scroungles fight!" Them guards got us into pairs, meanin' two lads or lasses doin' somethin' together. I learned that there word from me boss. I got paired with a young lad who couldn' be older than 17, he was tremblin' 'is head off. Though, most of us were. Them wooden swords were heavier than I was thinking they'd be, so when I first got it me arms almost failed me. "Alright!" Bede barked from his platform. "I want ye all to hold that sword with two hands, and when your opponent strikes, to try to block as best as ye can! GO!" Immediately every lad in that line struck with 'is sword. Me opponent tried to hit me with some sort of jab, but for some reason, me body just moved by it's self, and 'is shot missed me. Me first fear was that I was possessed with some demon, as me arm moved me sword out and caught 'im in the chest, knocking 'im off 'is feet. I looked up with fear at Bede, it looked like me body was possessed for sure.
"AHA!" Bede roared, "We got ourselves here a natural! Did ye lads see what he did? Fancy foot work, moved out of the way and gave that there lad a lesson!" Me mind was racing fast, Bede seemed out of 'is mind with joy, as well as them other dwarves. "Very good, laddie, very good. What be your name?" I found me eyes starin' at the little man with confusion. "I- I have no name, sir. Me parents are in heaven with the merciful Father and they never gave me one." He looked at me with shock in 'is eyes. "No name?" Every other lad was lookin' at me, the whole yard gone quiet, and even though me eyes couldn't see it, I knew them guards were lookin' too. I could feel me face growin' red. Bede quickly recovered and 'imself and grabbed me arm, pulling me up on 'is platform. "From this day forward, this here laddie will be know as Richard, after the great King Richard!" He bellowed. I got even more red as me fellow peasants looked at me with awe. "Now that's settled," Brede growled, "get on with ye training!"
We was training from when the bright sun was over me head, to when it was over behind them far away mountains, were we was told them creatures are from. "Get into line!" Bede exploded. We did as the little man said faster than a rabbit bein' chased by a ferrit, for after that day was over, we'd grown to fear 'im.
"Now then lads, this was the first day of training ye lazy arses into fine soldiers, and if ye thought today was rough, wait until tomorrow!" He and all them other dwarves gave their laughs I have come to hate. "Off to bed with ye! But first, get your grub. Ye can't be good men without food and rest." We hobbled in groups out of that there yard, sweat on me forehead, and me body aching like never before. The dining hall we was gonna eat in for the next 3 weeks as Bede said was small and dimly light, I was startin' to feel a wee bit cramped. Me dinner was tough bread and beer. That was fancy that was, compared to me food back home. I got stares throughout me meal, which I found I didn' like. Me friends Edward joined me at me table. "That was a tiring day that was." He whispered. I looked at 'is sweaty face and knew what he was thinkin'. He wanted to know how I did what I did. "Me body is tired then, I'm headin' to bed now." I got up and walked to me quarters, which was as cramped and damp as that there hall. We was showed were we slept earlier in the day. I got onto me hard straw bed and hummed meself to sleep with a lullaby me nurse use to sing me:
Go to sleep and rest your head,
Me little wee lad,
While the world is bad,
I promise you that when ye wake,
Everything will be alright.
Slowly I fell into a dreamless sleep.
