New York City and New Jersey, among many other states, have declared a state of emergency. DE, and MD shores have been under mandatory evacuation. The OBX are being devastated by 9 foot waves. Manhattan may have to be evacuated. All this and more, brought to you by Hurricane Irene.
Hurricane Irene is a devastating hurricane. If you haven't heard of it, get out from the rock you're living under. With winds up to 105 mph it is still only Category 2, but that doesn't mean it isn't dangerous. According to most of the hurricane track models, it is very likely that it WILL make landfall, even though there is a small chance it will miss the coast. Today it is on the Outer Banks in North Carolina, but by late Saturday it should hit places like Eastern PA (where I am :'( ), Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey.
The Weather Channel has been keeping a very close eye on the storm, and here is what it has been saying.
"The threat level is "EXTREME" along the East Coast from eastern North Carolina to southern New England."
"Irene is a hurricane that poses an extraordinary threat and is one that no one has yet experienced in North Carolina to the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast and New England. This includes Norfolk, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, and Boston. This hurricane has the potential to produce flooding rains, high winds, downed trees (on houses, cars, power lines) and widespread power outages. Significant impacts along the immediate coast include high waves, surge and beach erosion."
Here are some images from the Weather Channel too.
This storm (and this blog) isn't to be taken lightly if you live in a place that will be affected by Irene.
If you do, then check out this link. If you won't be affected by Irene, then this is just information.
So be safe if you are along the East Coast.
Oh, and by the way, DON'T go outside and play in the hurricane.
This is hittin where I am now.. powers out every 5 mins instead of staying off lol.. reeaally humid,no lightning yet.Just real strong wind and a little rain :o
Hey Under I also heard tht its gonna go all the way through Canada and out the other side so good luck with Irene i live in Fl and it barely missed us but it messed up miami a little.
If only we could play in a hurricane without getting thrown around by winds..
It's pretty weird that New York finally gets a natural disaster after all these years. I ALSO live in NY, but I guess I feel neutral about Irene. You don't know whats coming until it hits. But, I've taken huge precautions, so I think I'll live.
YaY! I live in New Jersey, so I'll be receiving the full blast of the classic storm (BTW: The news is being overly dramatic. Remeber Hurricane Floyd back in '99? Now THAT was a monstrous storm!).
@RinCanFlyy, I live in New York also. I'm only slightly worried because my family has taken MANY precautions. And I'm not in the evacuation or flood zones. Only risk is of blackouts and falling trees.
correction, most of new york state. most of new york state is going to be affected, NOT just new york city. trust me, i live in upper ny state. you were correct on the state of emergency though, its just i know a lot of my friend's house will be flooded because of all the rain
I live in the eastern most part of Philadelphia, but i'm not going to flip out as it'll mostly just be uproated trees from the ground being saturated from all of the most recent rain and some power-outages from the winds.
I've been keeping up with this storm so I know all of this already, but nice informative blog for those who don't know.
