The Dream.
“I was a mini cupcake with my taco dog, Gus. He was a chihwahua mini schnauzer mix. Talk about some mixed up cheese! My favorite thing to do was watch him chase a parked School Twinkie. Only Gus and I were not that lucky today. We were on a plate and my brother was reaching for me. My dog whimpered and it all went black.”
It all started when I was rushed to the hospital because my brother forcing a toy car down my throat. It somehow made it to my stomach. The so called doctor began a surgery. He ended up being a bus driver who wanted some extra money. He was going to try out his new invention that was supposed to make you not have to eat ever again. It was also supposed to keep a healthy weight on the person. H e placed it in my stomach and flicked it on remote control mode and grabbed the toy car. He then took an x – ray picture of another girl’s stomach. He showed that picture to my mom.
At ten o’clock, I woke up screaming and yelling, full of pain. My mom came in to find me turning into a cupcake. It backfired and hit my dog and barely missed the rest of my family. I disappeared and awoke in a food world.
I yelled “ Jay – Man, it’s me! It’s Sarah and Gus Gus! Don’t eat me!” I wished we were back at home. It all was wet, hot, and black. I could just barely hear Gus calling for me to come back. All of a sudden, the pink floor was moving from under me. “Well, this is not the type of decorating I would prefer!” I said, trying to make myself feel better.
A tiny wormlike thing came to me in a wave of stinky waterlike stuff. She called out to me “This is saliva. It does a chemical digestion by helping to break down the food.” The rug under me picked me up and pushed me forward onto a hard group of rude white things!
“I wonder how many chews it will take before she becomes crumbs!” said the tooth under me. They all laughed at his remark.
“Let me guess, this is mechanical digestion.” I said to the worm. He nodded
. “I am a she.” she said to me, as if she read my mind.
“Sorry, I said. I was blushing really bad. “Do you know any more facts about the mouth? I asked curiously.
“Of course I do! Call me Germanie. One fact is Jacob makes 1 to 3 pints of saliva each day! The other fact is about the esophagus. An adult’s esophagus is from 10 – 14 inches long.” She waved goodbye as the teeth fell upon me. I was glad I could not feel pain. The tounge pushed me down the esophagus. As I left the first part of my journey, I saw Gus come in.
“Don’t worry, you will see him in the third stage.” Said Germanie. Muscles were pushing us down the esophagus. This linked the mouth to the stomach. I found this a simple fact I did not want to share with my new friend.
We were all of a sudden falling into a green pool of stench. Gus came falling in a moment later. He yelped and floated over to me. He licked me and I laughed.
Then, a boy floated over. “Hey, what are you?” he asked.
“I am a mini cupcake.” I proudly replied. I showed him a picture. He showed me his wrapper that was also swallowed. He was a mini Reeses cup. I saw the picture of him on the wrapper and thought he was kinda cute. Now, we were all an ugly mush. “We should be in here for about another hour.” I said.
“I will only be in here for about another five minutes.” He sadly replied. I hope we will meet again in our original state at food heaven.” I noticed that this stomach was small. I saw snot all over the wall of the small stomach. “Ew! Ew ew ew ew ew! Gross!” I screamed. When I turned around to see why Gus was crying, I noticed our new friend had moved on farther into the digestive system. He was in the middle of a game of fetch with a tiny stick. Gus was staring at where he disappeared, holding the stick.
“An adult’s stomach can hold up to 1.5 liters of material.” Said Germanie. She gave me a sympathetic smile and turned around to comfort the depressed dog. I fell asleep and woke up in the small intestines.
It was a puffy tube that was a grayish – purple color. “Hey! That is tiny villi all over the wall right?” I asked myself aloud. Germanie nodded to herself. “Can you tell me about the small intestines, circulatory system, cells, gall bladder, pancreas, and liver?” I whispered. I did not know why I was whispering, but I was.
“An adult’s small intestines is about 6 meters long.” Germanie pulled out a chalkboard out of thin air. I imagined it rising into my brother’s lungs and him coughing all over my mom and sister. I giggled at that idea.
“ The circulatory system brings nutrients to all parts of the body. Blood can circulate through your whole body in about 20 seconds.” She said in a matter of fact kind of voice. I thought to myself “The nutrients get to my blood stream by the tiny villi. I knew I was about to be absorbed.
When we made it into the blood steam, I saw all the tiny cells. I noticed what used to be my sprinkles and frosting, was missing. I noticed there were a lot of cells that loolked like Germanie. I pondered out that these must be bacteria cells and she was bacteria. There were more of these than any other. I knew that cells contain organelles that carry out specific functions. “ Prokaryotis single celled organisms were the earliest and most primitive forms of life on earth.” Said Germanie.
“Back in the large intestines, our sprinkles and frosting are most likely having an adventure worth hearing. The large intestines are shorter than the small intestines! It is most likely a reddish – brown color. It’s main purpose is to absorb the water from the waste. Phew! That took a lot of breath!” I sat there, gaping at my friend’s speech.
We were approaching the rectum. “Do you know anything about the gall bladder, Sarah?”
“Yeah, you can live without it. My mom does not have a gall bladder.” I gave her a proud smile, feeling VERY smart.
“It also can hold u to 50 ml. of bile. It is composed of water and electrolytes.” She added to my fact. “Do you know anything about the pancreas?”
“um… yeah. Isn’t it a yellowish organ that is 7 inches long.”
“Right, it also helps break down fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Did you know that it produces insulin that is used to lower your blood glucose.”
“Wow!” I said. “You are really smart! I know what is next! The liver! I don’t know anything about it from the top of my head though!
“ Well, your mom’s liver is probably 1400 grams big. That is 1400 paper clips! It isalso VERY important that your liver has blood circulation, or it cannot function. Finally, 75% of your blood supply for the liver comes from your portal wein, rich in nutrients.”
“If your liver fails, you practically looklike you can glow in the dark because you turn so yellow! My mom saw that during one of her clinicals!” I blurded out excitedly. Germanie grinned ear to ear, glad that I knew something about the liver.
When we reached theanus, I said goodbye to my new friend. I grabbed Gus the best I could and heard Germanie’s last words.
“This is where waste leaves the body! It is connected to the rectum!” I added to it, “It is the grossest part of the digestive system. I closed my eyes.
I woke up with a start, Gus snoring. I found him under the covers, barely touching my feet. “It was all just a bad dream! Well, at least I have a story for Ms.Bracewell’s class.” I got up and started typing up my great adventure…
The End!!!
