Member Based Help Desk

Nice attempt, but my idea, similar to this, was shut down. I suggested IRL Helpdesk, where people could anonymously(to the public, anyways) ask questions about anything. Users could answer, but names of responders are revealed in case of rude remarks. It would have opened up a new admin position, a new badge for answering questions, and even earne Savii Points. My idea, unfortunately, was shot down and considered "Resolved", without a reply.

The helpdesk's purpose isn't really just new feature ideas.

And if this were implemented, there would probably be numerous troll answers and the like. In addition to that, members who don't think an idea through and then decide it's a good idea could easily distort the popularity of an idea.

And for posts not related to new feature ideas, answers could end up like Yahoo! Answers.

Why would it? It would integrate (not mathematically) the SDK community. In fact, it makes perfect sense to have it on BBs. I'll set one up as an experiment.

I know there is dissatisfaction with the Helpdesk, nonetheless it is still the means that was specifically set up for designated people to answer questions from the public. Allowing anyone to answer defeats that purpose and suggests that everyone has equal qualification and expertise. We can't all be on both sides of the counter. It is not supposed to be like Yahoo Answers or a forum nor is it designed to be. Yahoo Answers can make crackpot answers believable if they get voted up enough, and it happens. Questions can still be asked, discussed, debated on the Bulletin Boards, however setting up a dedicated thread for general questions usurps the authority of secretaries.

Well, what if the help desk gets redisigned. Maybe everyone can post, but secretaries have a colored names or something of the like. Everyone can post, but secretaries are more reliable then normal members. Also, normal members wouldn't be able to hit the button that says the problem is resolved except for the question's maker of coarse, because they should be able to resolve their own problems.

Questions aren't resolved if the situation isn't resolved. Some questions are resolved with no "reason" because they're duplicates or they're just troll questions. That's a reason. You think that regular user would be able resolve questions? lolno, only the person that posted the question and the secretaries would be able to do that. The secretaries would be recognized as secretaries, with like, a different colored name or something, and they would be able to delete the bad/troll answers.

To clarify on "allowing anyone to answer...suggests that everyone has equal qualification and expertise", admins are *supposed* to know more, else they ought not be an admin. Sure there are admins who are oblivious and unreliable, and there are normal users who are knowledgeable and sensible. (Not about to get into the whole selection discussion.) Perfection is impossible, however striving for perfection should be expected and is an admirable quality.

For chatrooms, forums, profiles, etc? Yes, admins are primarily there to patrol. The Helpdesk is different and as such its admins' main purpose is to provide assistance.

The usurping was referring to undermining the Helpdesk with specific forum threads. It's like complaining about your supervisor to the supervisor's supervisor before even trying to work it out with him directly.

Is having normal users involved in answers really about producing better answers, or about the sake of being involved? If "communism" is one's concern, might it be worth mentioning that it is a system based on the assumptions that everyone is fully equal, property is owned by everyone, and there is to be zero authority? It is a proven fact that publicly answerable question-answer sites provide less reliable answers as the user count increases. Now forget about honestly inaccurate wrong answers for a moment: I argue that an open Helpdesk fosters deliberately false answers, exploitation, chatting, venting, and just general misuse. Not exactly worth the price. Let's also not overlook that the ideal Helpdesk by definition is designed to be organised, simple to use, and devoid of opinion. Reliability is a given!

Point is, I'm not in favour of turning the Helpdesk into a HelpConvention or a HelpCongress.
