Can we REALLY make the claim that video games are making the youth of today violent?

This is simply a stereotype. The media believes that teenagers are that easy to influence. I think we should quit talking about this, and TALK ABOUT THE DECREASE IN GOOD PARENTING SKILLS NOWADAYS. That`s the issue. Parents need to take responsibility for their own actions.

Not to sink your boat, but the thread title is literally targeting kids. Not teenagers. Teenagers should know already how to separate reality from a stinking little CD we call "violent" video games.

Video games do not make people violent. I hear ALL the time that people play video gas to relieve their stress and frustration. It calms people down because they are having fun. Movies or T.V. shows could be a much bigger provider to people becoming more violent. You see a lot more messed up stuff in T.V. and movies than video games, giving people ideas and what not. And It could also give a kid a role modle to look up to maybe a bad one, like the Joker from Batman.

I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives.

It's all maturity. Not age. Kids should be taught right and wrong.

Of course video games make kids violent! Just look at how flailingly into Wii Sports kids got, smashing their hands into things, shattering TV sets, breaking windows. Ban Wii Sports!

We can claim video games make us more violent, but to what degree is the real question. Parents today will complain that their child(ren) spend too much time playing video games and they`ll talk about how the game is inappropriate in the matter of violence BUT, are they doing anything to stop it? I mean chances are the parent, grandparent, family friend or whoever else bought the game for them. If you don`t want a child to play violent games first off: don`t by them. second off: Let other people know-if they want to by things for your kids- not to buy those type of games. Especially if they`re younger I mean they have ratings for a reason people. But like some of you, the arguement is the fact that it depends on who you`re talking about, which I agree with that point. It is really about who your audience is, if you see destructive behavior in a kid, obviously be smart enough to steer them away from those games, if they seem to handle it appropriately, then I don`t see anything wrong with letting them-in the game- kill a couple bad guys. Now I`m not saying to let a little 5 year old watch a bunch of zombies with torn off limbs and heads ripped off run around and attack people, I believe there`s a limit of how much-and what type- of violence they`re exposed to. Yes, games may play a small role in the growing violence we have today, but with everything else added into it such as age, person, and the game, ect. it is not a good claim to say that a game turns people violent. In my opinion, if you try to tell me that the game itself turns someone cruel and violent, I`d say that that arguement is invalid. So the answer to the question "Can we really make the claim that video games are making the youth today violent" is yes and no.

Interesting this was brought up now. When I first heard of the Charleston church shooting a few days ago, I couldn't help but immediately think of Kingsman: The Secret Service. In a way, that movie's infamous scene justified the over-the-top violence by having the victims being white supremacists. Dylann Roof, the shooter, is now known to have had habits of drugs and video games. Games, movies, television, music, whatever--they are ultimately meant to be recreation, not a substitute for healthy living. Everyone is defined by the experiences they intake on a daily basis. But it is up to their sensibility and conscience to maintain that line between fiction and reality.

It's not the game itself, but rather how well each player, to his or her own, distinguishes fantasy from reality, as well as his or her ability to form an independent opinion about such material. A lot of the time, we see mentally unstable individuals pursuing the realization of their ideal video game worlds because they think, for some reason, that people are just as equally vulnerable to manipulation as animated characters might be in a game. However, some who are perfectly sane simply use the video game claim as a scapegoat and, therefore, distract people from the real problem, which would be said individual, and instead people would immediately
turn to the subject of the individual's blame. Juvenile delinquents are known in the media for blaming their actions on totally unrelated groups of people and/or abstract theories and ideas. Video games are not the problem, but rather, each person to his or her own.
