R/S/E had powerful, but not unnecessary pokemon. Even the base pokemon became powerful.

For me, I didn't like R/S/E because I got FireRed and LeafGreen before any of the R/S/E games so to me they weren't special.

Yeah, well, they pwned even more with that game cuz a lot of the things in it people thought were immpossible to design with the 1998 level technology.
